| Forums back... and turned off |
[Jul. 29th, 2009|12:11 am] |
OK, to recap. We got Reddited (thanks Antiarc!) resulting in something approaching a DDOS attack, and it looks like our ISP pulled the DNS entry to stop their datacentre getting hammered. So I could access the server using the IP address, but (almost) no one could get in to actually post.
I was looking for a way to alter the apache config to let people get to the forums with the IP address when the web control panel told me it would be a good idea to upgrade itself. This turns out to be a much bigger process then I had thought. So when the forums suddenly popped back up for me I turned them off while the upgrade continues. |

[Mar. 1st, 2007|03:21 pm] |
...since I'm sure you're all gripped by the saga of my ADSL router. Apparently a parcel was signed for yesterday by one of my downstairs neighbours. Just that no one thought to tell me about it.
If you're coming in late, no I don't know why the forums are down. I need to go home from work to get the connection details so I can raise a support ticket to get the server rebooted. Having a home internet connection would really help! |

| CD SWAP SIGN UP HERE! |
[Aug. 22nd, 2006|02:17 pm] |
As promised, here is where you can apply to take part in an international CD Swap.
To recap: everyone supplies their address (screened, naturally), I send you back the details of your randomly selected victim. You are expected to put together an audio CD of your favourite tunes (and/or stuff you think your victim should hear) and send it to them reasonably promptly. A little letter explaining who you are and what you're sending would be nice, too.
I'd like to keep this to people I know (real life or forums), and friends of people on my friends list. So if you know someone who would like to be part of this that doesn't read my LJ, let them know.
Copy, paste and fill out the section below as a comment to this entry. It will be screened for your privacy. I've put 'Forum Name' as a field in case it's different from your LJ name and to make it easier for me to cut and paste. If you don't have a forum name, don't worry about it.
I won't pass across your email address to anyone else.
It may be possible for me to swap you to someone else once the picks have been made, but please don't ask just because it's someone you don't know.

| Mix-CD swap! |
[Aug. 8th, 2006|03:15 pm] |
Hi all,
I know someone ran a CD-swap last year, and I think I'd like to do it again. Is anyone interested?
For the uninitiated, it's very simple. You put together a CD of your favourite music and post it to a random person that I specify for you. And you get a CD from someone else. Like secret santa, but cheaper.
Post here to signal interest. If there are enough people, I'll make a later post with screened entries for you to post your address. Mostly I'd like to keep the people on it to forumites and people with a history at PvP/Forumopolis. So if you know of someone on your friends list that doesn't read my journal, feel free to let them know about this post. Repost in your own journal if you like. This isn't a forum mod thing. I'm not going to ban people for not sending out a CD, anything like that. It's just a bit of fun.
So who is in?
Edit: the assumption is that everyone goes into the same pot. There is no 'America' or 'International' choice, so you might end up posting to Australia/Germany/the North Pole*. But then it's only a CD, so shipping shouldn't be too bad.
*OK, probably not that one. |

| [ | music |
| | Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ramblinman | ] | So, not only do we have the World Cup to deal with, now Wimbledon has begun so the ladies have an excuse to hog the remote for two weeks. Can't say I'm all that bothered about tennis, but I like following the Brits so I'm reading the text commentary that the BBC supplies. I don't know who is writing them, but I'm rather amused. Here are some of the better moments:
Henman 2-2 Soderling Anything Soderling can do, Henman can do just as well - he serves solidly to win his game to love. Tim's father Tony is watching from the stands, wearing a very natty Panama hat. As usual his face is utterly expressionless. You wouldn't want to play him at poker.
Henman 2-3 Soderling Soderling holds again comfortably. He's not serve and volleying, but on this pristine surface his groundstrokes are doing a lot of damage. To be fair, Tony Henman is probably more of a whist man than a poker dude. Either way, his face is a closed book.
Henman 5-5 Soderling The best tennis of the match so far. Henman volleys like the Henman of old to hold his serve when the nerves could have been jangling. Still no breaks of serve. If Tim wins today, beats Roger Federer in the second round and goes on to win the entire tournament in epic fashion, would his dad smile then?
Henman 1-1 Soderling As the match moves into its second hour, Soderling holds comfortably. Henman is looking a touch disconsolate. Up in the stands, Mr H senior puts his foot up on the railing - an act of almost indecent rebelliousness.
Henman 2-1 Soderling Henman's most impressive game of the match so far. He whips a forehand passing-shot past Soderling and then fools him with a drop-shot so well disguised it was virtually wearing a false beard and sunglasses.
Henman 5-2 Soderling Better from Henman again. Soderling is now the one whose head has dropped a little. Whilst Henmania is yet to break out, two middle-aged ladies in Union Jack vests and caps are clapping enthusiastically. One then spoils the effect by yawning like a basking seal.
Aheh. |

I should update more. Just haven't felt inclined recently.
Anyway. Today was a little out of the ordinary. SPent a few hours in a recording studio playing tracks to make up a CD for my brass quintet. We're going to do a sampler we can hand out to prospective clients with the hope of getting paid work. We sounded surprisingly good, especially once the guy at the mixing desk started cutting and pasting to take out the mistakes and replace them with the times we got it right. Who knows, maybe we can turn this into a little money earner.
I have the week off work, but there's a lot of preparation to do leading up to the visit of my brass band's twin band from Germany. They get here on Thursday. Before that we're having a marquee raised in the band's village which will require filling with tables, chairs, staging, lights and much more. We'll certainly be busy. And the weather forecast says rain all week. Oh well, we need it.

Hi!
If you're reading this but little else, that's because my LJ has been friends only for some time now. If you'd like me to friend you, drop me a note in this entry or on Forumopolis and I'll consider letting you in. Though as it is I struggle to get through my friends entries if I'm away for a day or more, so you may not make the cut, sorry. But don't let that stop you from asking. |

| | Lambchop - Low Ambition | ] | Paid off the balance on my new car at lunchtime. Just 24 hours to go until it is mine! Muhahahahahahaha.
Is getting a car on Friday 13th a bad thing?
Tonight I have some exciting tasks:
1) Find the MOT certificate for my old car. 2) Swap my newish car stereo out for the old one. 3) Clean the car. (This is kinda like cleaning the house before the maid gets there, but it could do with a once over with the vacuum cleaner before it goes) 4) Sort my CDs.
I'm thinking 4 is going to take the longest. Finally got my new CD storage assembled and fixed to the wall, but all my CDs are mixed up after the move. I have 4 piles that come up to my waist. Around 12 feet of CDs. Sorting them is not going to be easy. On the other hand, spotting discs that I've not seen for a while may inspire me to play some of them on the radio tomorrow. |

| | Lambchop - AWCMON | ] | So... I got a new car.
There's all paperwork, insurance and tax to sort out, so I don't pick it up until Friday, but a few miles from here there's a shiny (fairly) new Ford Focus with my name (not) on it.
I'd show you a picture but the garage has taken the advert down, and anyway I can't upload pictures from work even if I had one. So just imagine the 5dr hatchback in burgundy. The faux wood interior is kinda crappy, but it goes vroom and has nice features like AC, power steering, electric windows and remote central locking that I have until now lacked. It even has a heated front windscreen for extra de-fogging pleasure. I just need to get the standard stereo swapped out for my MP3-CD jobbie, and i'll be rocking while I'm rolling.
While I was at the garage I took a test drive in a Saab 93 that was the same price as the Focus. The boot space seemed comparable to the cabin space. Really cavernous at the back. Still, I felt rather cramped in the drivers seat, and it handled like a tank. A fairly speedy tank, but a tank nonetheless. Much preferred the Focus, and the salesman said I was mad, until I phoned my insurance people and they quoted me double my current amount. Then he started selling me the Ford properly... "much cheaper to maintain blah", "you're a bit young for a Saab blah". No fucking shit.
Off to Maidenhead tonight for reznorsedge's birthday dinner. Much jollity is expected. Means missing my wind band rehearsal, but since last week's was so shit for the entire brass section, maybe they'll think I'm on protest, or something.
Purchased new albums by Probot and Lambchop. Probot is what Dave Grohl has been doing for the last 4 years when he's not been playing with the Foo Fighters, QotSA , Tenacious D or just living the rock star life. I've had one of the tracks for aaaaages (nicked off the radio via KaZaA) featuring Lemmy, and it's great to finally have a proper version that doesn't have Jo Whiley talking over the end. I'm just listening to Lambchop now. It's a double album called AWCMON / NOYOUCMON. Very relaxing. |
